Pepper is the most widely used spice in the world and is known as the “King of the Spices”. Sri Lanka is one of the main pepper producers in the world.


Sri Lanka continues to be the leading producer of “Ceylon Cinnamon” in the world. Although it is grown in Madagascar and Seychelles (after many attempts), it does not have the same quality and pungency as that from Sri Lanka.


Both local and foreign research prove that Garcinia (Goraka) helps to control obesity by reducing fat, also one can add it to fish curry to get the desired sour taste.


Clove is largely used as dried whole buds. Ground clove is used for curry mixtures and clove oil is used for flavoring foods and in pharmaceutical and perfumery industries.


Nutmeg and mace are the two main products. Oils are extracted from both nutmeg and mace. Powdered nutmeg and mace are used as curry powders. Nutmeg and mace are mainly used for culinary purposes to flavor curries and other food products such as confectionaries and bakery products. It is also used in the preparation of beverages and drinks. Nutmeg is used as an ingredient in Ayurvedeic and Chinese medicine.


Mace is the dry, outer aril that firmly envelops the nutmeg kernel. Even though mace and nutmeg are derived from the same nutmeg fruit, these two are considered to be entirely two different spices. Mace possesses an intense aroma compared to the nutmeg. It also tastes more pungent and spicier than nutmeg. Although these two spices have similar uses in recipes, they are both hardly ever used together. Mace is mainly used in baking and has been playing the key role in flavoring doughnuts for centuries.

Cardamom, known as the “Queen of Spices” is a perennial herbaceous plant with a pseudo stem and thick irregular shaped rhizomes.


Ginger has a long history of use for relieving digestive problems such as nausea, loss of appetite, motion sickness and pain. The root or underground stem (rhizome) of the ginger plant can be consumed fresh, powdered, dried as a spice, in oil form or as juice.


Coriander has multiple health benefits. Coriander or cilantro is a wonderful source of dietary fiber, manganese, iron and magnesium as well. In addition, coriander leaves are rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin K and protein. They also contain small amounts of calcium, phosphorous, potassium, thiamin, niacin and carotene.
